A CATV tuner apparatus (37) includes a first low-noise amplifier (31) which amplifies an input signal received at an input terminal, the first low-noise amplifier (31) having an adequately small noise figure to allow the received input signal to be amplified with no substantial degradation of a carrier-to-noise ratio of the input signal. An automatic gain control (32) detects the level of the signal amplified by the first low-noise amplifier (31) and adjusts the amplitude of the signal. A band-pass filter (33) eliminates out-of-band signal components from the signal received from the automatic gain control (32) and passes only in-band signal components. A second low-noise amplifier (34) amplifies the signal received from the band-pass filter (33). A frequency multiplier (35) produces an intermediate frequency signal (IF) at an output terminal by multiplication of the signal that is amplified by the second low-noise amplifier (34), with a signal output from a local oscillator (36). <IMAGE>
