Screening for inhibitors of terpenoids biosynthesis

A method is described for high-sensitivity screening for the presence of inhibition of at least one enzyme in the biosynthetic pathway to terpenoids via 1-deoxy-D-xylulose 5-phosphate in plants by incubating an aqueous suspension of plastids or plastid-bearing cells in the presence of a labelled biochemical procursor for generating terpenoids via said pathway and preferably in the presence of a combination of ATP and CTP or a source thereof with or without the addition of a prospective inhibitor and determining the production of labelled product or intermediate downstream from 1-deoxy-D-xylulose 5-phosphate or notably the release of tritiated water. Further, labelled biochemical precursors are described as well as means and methods of inhibition.
