PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To render a method and apparatus applicable even when a demand is high with respect to printing quality by picking up a plate image of a carving cell formed on a gravure plate, and calculating an opening image area of the carving cell from an image data obtained, and also correcting the opening area of the carving cell based on a carving stylus abrasion degree. SOLUTION: In a cell measuring apparatus, the image inputting unit 10 operates to indicate the variable density of a carving cell picked up by an image picking device 5 and a binary image being binarized by a predetermined threshold value to an outputting part 7. Also, an operator manipulates an inputting part 6 to input carving conditions. Next, in a cell calculation means 12, a configuration parameter is corrected on the basis of the carrying condition data 15 by a cell correction means 13. By allowing a gravure plate 2 to rotate and carving heads 3a-3f to move in the axial direction of the gravure plate 2, the gravure plate 2 is carved in the whole of the plate surface.
