PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce polyester staple fibers for a cushioning material suitable as the cushioning material having high resistance to high-temperature permanent set in fatigue and rich in soft feeling and elasticity for uses having many chances for exposure to high temperatures such as for vehicles and the cushioning material. SOLUTION: The polyester staple fibers for a cushioning material have >=0.66 intrinsic viscosity [ηs], <=20% elongation in an elongation region under a constant stress in a strength-elongation curve, 80-180% breaking elongation, -5 to +5% shrinkage percentage in boiling water and dry heat shrinkage percentage at 180 deg.C, <=50 g/d Young's modulus and >=75 deg.C glass transition temperature. The resistance to permanent set in fatigue at 70 deg.C is >=70% when the polyester staple fibers are used as base material fibers and the base material fibers are joined in points with heat bonding fibers.
