PURIFICATION OF CALIXARENES

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain various p-methylcalixarene derivatives which contain a methyl group at the p-position and a phenolic hydroxyl group modified with an acetyl group in a high purity in a high yield. SOLUTION: A mixture containing p-methylhexaacetoxycalix [6] arene (A) or p-methylheptaacetoxycalix[7]arene (B) is dissolved in acetone once. A solid phase comprising the component A as a main component is precipitated and taken out. The component A is selectively extracted from the solid phase using an organic solvent having 18-20 (Mpa1/2) solubility parameter such as ethyl acetate and the organic solvent is removed from the extracted solution to give the high-purity component A. Acetone is removed from the acetone solution after removal of the solid phase to give a mixture, which is dissolved in an organic solvent having 14-16 (Mpa1/2) solubility parameter such as diethyl ether. A solid phase composed of a high-purity component B is precipitated and recovered.
