PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyvinyl alcohol resin composition suppressed in thermal deterioration such as decomposition or gelation and having stabilized PVA melt moldability and giving a molding excellent in impact resistance and shape stability. SOLUTION: This composition comprises (A) a polyvinyl alcohol having a degree of polymerization of 200-1,200, a degree of saponification of 75-99.99 mol%, a melting point of 160-230 deg.C, and having a total content of terminal carboxyl groups and terminal lactone rings of 0.008-0.15 mol% and (B) an alkali metal salt in such amounts that 0.003-1 pt.wt. alkali metal of component B is present per 100 pts.wt. component A.
