PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a screw feeder eliminating the need for a large screw driving device and extruding under a high and dramatically compressed pile, and the start method for the screw feeder. SOLUTION: A screw feeder is constituted of a bin 1 with a feed out opening or a bed 5, a screw 4, a rotary driver 11 to 14 for the screw, a turning movement driver 7 to 10 for the screw, and an auxiliary driver for the screw. On a stage before a pile is laminated, the second end of the screw 4 is moved to place in front of a support station to connect with the auxiliary driver. On an initial start stage after the pile is laminated, the rotary driver 11 to 14 and the auxiliary driver drive the screw feeder. On a state where the feeding out of the pile starts, the auxiliary driver is disconnected, the rotary driver 11 to 14 alone drives the screw feeder, and the turning travel driver 7 to 10 is started.
