PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a composition for oral cavities, exhibiting a high microorganism adhesion-inhibiting effect, capable of effectively inhibiting the formation of dental plaques, and useful for preventing oral cavity diseases by adding a carboxymethyldextrane. SOLUTION: This composition for oral cavities contains a carboxymethyldextrane of the formula [R is CH2COOM (M is H or the like)] and, preferably, further xylitol. The carboxymethyldextrane preferably has an average mol. wt. of 5,000-1,000,000, and preferably contains the carboxymethyl groups in an amount of 0.1-1.0 group per unit structure. The carboxymethyldextrane and the xylitol are preferably contained in amounts of 0.01-5 wt.% and 0.1-25 wt.%, respectively, in the composition. When the composition is a dentifrice such as a tooth paste, the composition may be mixed with a polishing agent (for example, crystalline silica), a binder (for example, carboxymethylcellulose) and a thickener (fot example, sorbitol).
