PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper-calendering method and a machine therefor that can dissolve or at least minimize the defects of the conventional techniques. SOLUTION: The fiber web (80) passes the nip, the nip is constituted with a cylindrical heating roller (22) on one side and with the flexible tubular jacket (12) that is pressed toward the heating roller by the convex loading shoe on the other side. The length of the loading shoe 18 is shorter than the length of the heating roller 22 in its axis line. When the loading shoe 18 is pressed by the heating roller 22, the tapered section is formed at both ends of the jacket in the nip and the fiber web is calendered. In this case, the small strips on individual edge of the fiber web 80 may be covered with the fiber web and may not be calendered in the long nip.
