PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a 4-amino-1,2,4-triazolin-5-one compound useful as an intermediate for the active compounds of herbicides in a high yield and in a high purity by reacting an oxadiazolinone with hydrazine hydrate in the absence of a solvent. SOLUTION: This method for producing a 4 amino 1,2,4-triazolin-5-one compound of formula II comprises reacting (A) an oxadiazolinone of formula I (R is an alkyl, an alkoxy, an alkylthio, an alkylamino or a dialkylamino) with (B) hydrazine hydrate in the absence of a solvent in the presence of a basic compound, adding water and a solvent (preferably toluene, methyl acetate or t-butylmethylether) to the reaction product, adding an acidic substance to the mixture to adjust the solution to pH 5. 0-8.0, thus precipitating the 4-amino-1,2,4- triazolin-5-one, and then recovering the precipitate.
