PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently produce the steel sheet at a low cost without generating cracking at the time of hot working by removing the surface layer part in the face cut by flame in a slab obtd. by subjecting an ingot having a specified compsn. to blooming at a specified draft by machining to make it into a flat face, heating it to a specified temp. range and executing rolling at a specified critical draft. SOLUTION: An austenitic stainless ingot contg., by weight, 15 to 25% Cr, 7 to 16% Ni and 0.5 to 2.5% B is subjected to blooming at a total draft of 20 to 85% in the thickness direction and is subjected to flame cutting to form into a slab. This slab is rolled with the face cut by flame as the side face. At this time, the surface layer part in the face subjected to the flame cutting is removed by machining to form into a flat face. Then, it is heated in the temp. range of 800 to 1180 deg.C and is rolled at a critical draft R (%) obtd. by the formula R=0.08T+l0, where T denotes the finishing temp. ( deg.C) in the rolling.
