PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-based magnetic coating composition that give a coating layer excellent in magnetic powder dispersibility, heat resistance and the like. SOLUTION: The water-based magnetic coating composition comprising a magnetic powder and a water-based binder, contains a carboxyalkylcellulose nitrate with a nitrate ester substitution degree of 0.2-2.95 per one anhydrous glucose unit, with a carboxyalkyl ether substitution degree of 0.05-2.8 in an amount of 1-70 wt.% based on the total amount of the whole water-based binder, as the water-based binder.
