PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-contrast liquid crystal composition which has good characteristics such as degree of reflection, color purity, etc., enables low setting of driving voltage and exerts a wide range of temperature compensation, and also provide a liquid crystal display element. SOLUTION: A reflex liquid crystal display element possesses a chiral nematic liquid crystal composition exerting a cholesteric phase at a room temperature, between one pair of base plates forming an electrode. The liquid crystal composition contains, as chiral material, from 10 to 45 wt.% compound having an asymmetric carbon. At least one of the chiral materials is a compound of formula I, (X-Y)n-Ar(wherein, X is halogen, hydroxyl group, 1-18C acyl group or 1-18C acyloxy group; Ar is a monovalent or divalent aromatic group bound to y via an ether bond or ester bond, or multiple aromatic groups linked via ester bond; (n) is an integer of 1 or 2; and Y is divalent group of formula II).
