PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and equipment for estimating a shape of a microdot forming a halftone dot from the theoretical area percent of original image data for printing and a dot percent obtained by measuring by a measuring unit a film or a printing plate which outputs the original image data actually. SOLUTION: A process (S4) wherein a pixel of which the data out of binary original pattern data are turned ON is replaced by an elliptical shape, a process (S5) wherein the area percent of the pattern data replaced by the elliptical shape to the whole is calculated and a process (S6) wherein an error between a dot percent obtained by outputting the original pattern by an output machine and measuring it beforehand and the area percent of the replaced pattern is calculated are provided, and a process (S7) wherein the error is calculated by changing the size of the elliptical shape and wherein the elliptical shape at the time when the error is minimum is estimated as a shape of a microdot of the output machine is provided.
