PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a triketone derivative useful as a herbicide capable of controlling a wide range of weeds at low doses in state scarcely not giving chemical damages to cultured crops, especially paddy rice. SOLUTION: A compound of formula I [R is methyl; X is H, a halogen, nitro, hydroxy, R1, OR1 (R1 is a 1-6C alkyl or the like) or the like; G is a five to seven-membered saturated condensed ring or the like; Z1 is a halogen, OR1 or the like; (q) is 1 or 2; (m) is 0-4]. 4-Chloro-5-(3-chloro-1-oxocyclohex-2-yl) carbonyl-2, 3-dihydrobenzothiophene-1,1-dioxide. The compound of formula I wherein G is benzothiophene-2-carboxylic acid and Z is OH is obtained by hydrolyzing a compound of formula II in the presence of the equivalent or more moles of an alkali metal hydroxide in a mixture solvent of an alcohol such as ethanol with water at room temperature to the boiling point of the solvent, converting the obtained compound of formula III into the halide compound, and then reacting the obtained compound of formula IV with a compound of formula V.
