A method of dyeing human hair comprises treating the hair with a dyeing composition containing an oxidative dye and allowing or causing oxidation of the oxidative dye on the hair thereby to develop the dye, wherein the oxidative dye used is a 2, 5-disubstituted diamino-benzene of the formula: <FORM:1015022/D1-D2/1> wherein X1 and X2 are the same or different substituent selected from carboxyl, sulphonic acid, hydroxyl, alkyl, alkoxy groups or halogen atoms, or a mixture of such compounds. There may be added, as nuancing agents to produce variations in shade, 1, 3-dehydroxybenzene, 1, 3-diaminobenzene, 2, 4-diaminoanisol, 1, 3-diamino-phenol, or 1-methyl-2-hydroxy-4-amino-benzene. The oxidative dyes may be added in the form of a liquid, cream, paste or jelly, and can be developed with known suitable oxidizing agents, it being preferred to mix hydrogen peroxide with the dyeing composition shortly before application to the hair. Detailed examples are given in which the dye compositions to which hydrogen peroxide is added may contain, in addition to the oxidative dye and a nuancing agent, polyacrylic acid and potash dye, or cetyl alcohol, lauryl alcohol ether sulphate and oxyethylated oleyl alcohol, with or without ammonia solution. |
