PURPOSE: 8-VSB adaptive channel equalizer and method for updating coefficients is provided so that the adaptability of the equalizer can be improved on the dynamic ghost changing rapidly in time and an equalizing speed of the equalizer can be improved by using partial taps including a main tap of a forward filter, not using all taps of the forward filter and feedback filter before equalizing the equalizer and gradually actuating the rest taps according to the filter coefficient and the value of error signal. CONSTITUTION: 8-VSB(Vestigital SideBand) channel equalizer and method for updating coefficient includes several steps. In a first tap actuating steps(31-33), all taps of M tap forward filter(21) are actuated according to the result of comparing the value of error signal with the predetermined first threshold value being produced by the differences between the size of coefficient of the main tap and the rest taps, and the equalized I channel input symbol and an input signal of N-tap feedback filter(23) after actuating partial taps including main tap. In a second tap actuating steps(34-37), all taps of N tap feedback filter(23) are actuated according to the result of comparing the value of error signal with the predetermined third threshold value, which is lower than the second threshold value, and the size of coefficient of the main tap of M-tap forward filter(21) and the rest taps after actuating partial taps of the N-tap feedback filter(23). |
