PURPOSE: A method for treating HIV infection is provided, particularly using the isozyme selective PKC inhibitor, (S)-3,4-£N,N'-1,1'-((2''- ethoxy)-3"'(O)-4"'-(N,N-dimethyl amino )-butane)-bis-(3,3'-indolyl)|-1(H)-pyrrole-2,5-dione or its acid salt. CONSTITUTION: A method for inhibit ing human immunodeficiency virus activation in an infected cell comprises containing the cell with a viral activation inhibit in amount of an inhibitor of the βisozyme of protein kinase C. The inhibitor of the βisozyme of protein kinase C is a bis-indolylmaleimide or a macro cyclic bis-indolylmaleimide. The inhibitor is isozyme selective and the isozyme selectivity is selected from the group consisting of beta-1 and beta-2 isozymes. The protein kinase C inhibitor has the formula (I) or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, prodrug or ester thereof.
