PURPOSE: Provided is a tricyclic compounds which inhibits tumor growth as an inhibitor of farnesyl protein transferase. A method for treating tumor cells expressing an activated ras oncogene comprising administering an effective amount of a compound is also provided. CONSTITUTION: Provided are tricyclic compounds of formula (1.0) wherein v is 0 to 4; w is 0; wherein a is N, and R1, R2, R3 and R4 are each independently selected from the group consisting of H or halo; wherein R1 is H; R2 is Br; and R3 and R4 are each independently selected from the group consisting of Br and Cl; wherein X is CH.; wherein R3 is Cl and R4 is Br; wherein w is 1; v is 0-5; R1 is H; R2 is Br; R3 and R4 are independently Cl and Br; R5-R8 are each H; X is CH; and Y is -O-C1-C6 alkyl, NH2 or -OM+. The compounds of formula (1.0) are useful for inhibiting tumor growth being farnesyl protein transferase inhibitors.
