PURPOSE: An image recorder is provided to prevent a damage of recording paper without widening a gap between a recording head and a platen roller and to prevent a degradation of printing quality based on a recovering delay of silent state of platen roller by the elasticity. CONSTITUTION: By inputting an order for returning a paper from an MPU(33), an MPU for controlling a platen motor(32) decides if a number of driving steps of a driving resource for returning the paper(7) are over a certain number of steps. Because the returning order of paper and a data about a spending returned amount of recording paper are inputted from the upper MPU(33), the MPU(32) checks if the returned amount of spending is over a certain value. The MPU for controlling the platen motor(32) calculates a driving speed of the driving resource for platen(15). When a difference between a main speed of upper tractor and a lower tractor and a main speed of platen roller is large in a case as the returned amount of recording paper is large, the recording paper is easily damaged. The driving speed of the driving resource for platen(15) is calculated so the returning speed of recording paper by the platen roller to be under the returning speed of recording paper by the upper tractor and the lower tractor and to be compared with the spending returned amount of recording paper.
