PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device excellent in carriage by making the size of a prism member small. SOLUTION: White S-polarized light emitted from a light source 1 and transmitted through a polarizing beam splitter 2 is color-resolved into the light beams of the three colors of R, G, and B by a prism 3 being a color resolving and synthesizing optical system, and the light beams of the three colors are respectively guided to a reflection type light valves 4R, 4G and 4B. The B light beam among the light beams made incident on the surface 3a of a first prism member 3A is reflected by a B light reflecting dichroic film formed on a surface 3b, totally reflected by the surface 3a, and guided to the light valve 4B. The R color light beam which is either one of the R color light beam and the G color light beam transmitted through the B light reflecting dichroic film is reflected by the R light reflecting dichroic film formed on a bonded surface 3e between a second prism member 3B and a third prism member 3C, totally reflected by a surface 3d, and guided to the light valve 4R. The G color light transmitted through the R light reflecting dichroic film is totally reflected by a surface 3f, and guided to the light valve 4G.
