PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To convert the data format of a horizontal printing system to that of a vertical printing system. SOLUTION: This converter is provided with an address generating means 60 and a DMA control means 70. The means 60 adds a read address offset value data corresponding to an N-value to prescribed reading starting address data corresponding to a once DMA operation cycle to generate reading address data for reading data of K-byte from a first storing area and adds a recording address offset value data corresponding to an M-value to prescribed recording starting address data to generate recording address data for recording data of K-byte to a second storing area. The means 70 which is provided with data format converting the means 72 for generating data of K-byte for storing the second storing area by isolating and combining data of K byte read from a data memory means 50 into the same bits and when a bus permitting signal is inputted from a CPU 40 as the result of outputting a bus requesting signal to the CPU 40, controls the means 60 to control data format converting operation.
