PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery having a larger capacity than a conventional battery using ordinary carbon material and excellent in cyclic characteristics. SOLUTION: A non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery includes a negative electrode consisting of composite particles structure so that part or the whole of the peripheral surface of each unclear particle consisting of solid phase A is covered with another solid phase B, wherein the solid phase A contains silicon or zinc as the constituent element while the phase B is a solid solution or the like or either of the silicon and zinc and elements selected among transition elements, etc., in the periodic table excluding the above-mentioned phase A constituent element, and it is arranged so that the lithium content of the solid phase A ranges 40-95 atomic % of the theoretical quantities of silicon and zinc as the constituent element, or the lithium content of the composite particles ranges 50-90 atomic % of the theoretical quantity of the composite particles, or in the negative electrode excluding current collector, the rate of volume expansion of the negative electrode excluding current collector ranges 110-200% when lithium is contained in a range not causing electrodeposition of lithium. |
