Pigmented solutions of polymers of at least 85% by weight of acrylonitrile are prepared by a process which comprises mixing an aqueous dispersion of pigment having particles not greater than about 1 micron in diameter with an organic solvent compatible with the acrylonitrile polymer, reducing, when necessary, the water content of the resulting dispersion, e.g. by distillation, until it contains not more than 3% water based on the weight of the organic solvent, and admixing the resulting dispersion with the acrylonitrile polymer. Polymers specified are polyacrylonitrile and copolymers of acrylonitrile with up to 15% of monomers such as vinyl acetate and vinyl chloracetate, C1-C4 alkyl acrylates, methacrylates, fumarates, and maleates, methacrylonitrile, styrene, alphamethyl styrene and vinyl and vinylidene chlorides. Solvents specified are dimethyl formamide, acetamide and methoxyacetamide, tris-(dimethylamido) phosphate, bis-(dimethylamido) and dimethyl methane phosphonate, diethyl phosphite, N-methyl pyrrolidone, 1,5-dimethyl pyrrolidone, butyrolactone and ethylene carbonate. The pigments specified are of the organic type. The resulting acrylonitrile polymer solutions may be spun to produce fibres. |
