PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a connector which can be used for versatile purposes and which can be miniaturized by a method wherein the state of a first electric contact is monitored by a processor and the type of an external device connected to the connector is judged on the basis of the state. SOLUTION: At least one out of electric contacts 23 to 27 of a connector 2 is connected to a processor 4. The processor 4 is provided with a 1.8-V power supply 16 which is connected to the contact 23 via a diode 18 for reverse-current prevention. The contact 27 is grounded, and the remaining contacts 24 to 26 are connected to the processor 4. The processor 4 monitors the voltage of the contact 23, and it judges the type of an external device which is connected to an electronic device via the connector 2. For example, in the case of a mobile telephone, a commonest external device which can be connected to the telephone is a head set, the battery charger of the telephone or a data device such as a computer or the like. The connector 2 is provided with the sufficient number of contacts so that it can be connected to external devices of all anticipated types.
