PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high-performance compound semiconductor light-emitting element, capable of stably controlling an externally derived interface level density at end faces over a long term, and providing both high output and long lifetime. SOLUTION: A compound semiconductor light-emitting element comprises a compound semiconductor layer formed on a substrate. The compound semiconductor layer includes a first conductive clad layer, an active layer and a second conductive clad layer, and the two facing end faces of the compound semiconductor layer provide a resonator structure. In this case, the surfaces of the first conductive clad layer, the active layer and the second conductive clad layer forming each end face of the compound semiconductor layer are covered with an inactive layer. At least one of the elements forming each end face of the compound semiconductor layer has no bond with oxygen, and a portion of the inactive layer adjacent to each end face of the compound semiconductor layer contains oxygen as a constituent element.
