PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read a picture with less density irregularity by installing a black level part between the white part of a white reference, which corrects picture density, and an installed original while a density correction means executes scanning. SOLUTION: In an auxiliary scanning whole area, the white part 20a of a white reference area and a black level part 20b which is prevented from being reflected to white reference are installed. The black level part 20b is installed along an installed original side. White reference used for a density correction means in an auxiliary scanning direction is executed by the white part 20a. Relating to such a device, picture density is corrected while the density correction means executes scanning in the white part 20a except the black level part 20b installed along the original picture side of an auxiliary scanning white reference face when picture density is corrected while the density correction means executes scanning by referring to auxiliary scanning white reference installed for correcting the influence of density irregularity owing to the light source of a picture reading scanning direction (auxiliary scanning direction).
