PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an illuminator and a photographing device using it by which a luminous flux from a light source means is made to illuminate the side of an object by high illuminating efficiency and which are suitable for a still camera, a video camera or the like. SOLUTION: As for the illuminator having the light source means 1 and an optical member 3 introducing the luminous flux from the light source means 1 from an incident plane and guiding out from a light exit surface, the optical member 3 possesses a prism member PF on which plural prisms are arrayed on the side of the light exit surface, and one part of the plural prisms is set by an angle by which the luminous flux from the incident plane is successively totally reflected by two surfaces forming a prism apex angle.
