PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a telephone set which can be also used, when it is connected to an existing telephone device or a PBX private exchange. SOLUTION: When device-identifying information is received from the telephone device being a connection opposite part or a host device such as the PBX private exchange, an operation mode is decided according to the identifying information. The name of a function which is realizable in the decided operation mode is displaying in a display part 7b. The function is executed in repose to the depression of a button which is arranged in the neighborhood of the part. When the button 6a arranged near the display of 'muting' is depressed, a call line at a transmitter side is released in order to prevent the call opposite party from hearing transmitting voice. Moreover, when the depression of the button 6a is redetected, control is executed to connect the call line at the transmitter side and so as to control the call opposite party to hear transmitting voice to enable the muting function is enabled.
