PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having high electro-magnetic conversion characteristics, suitable for high-density recording, and excellent running durability by providing on a non-magnetic support a magnetic layer mainly composed of ferromagnetic powders, a binder or the like. SOLUTION: A magnetic recording medium is fabricated by applying on a non-magnetic support 2 a non-magnetic coating material including, as main components thereof, at least non-magnetic powders and a binder to form lower non-magnetic layers 3a, 3b, and thereafter, applying thereon a magnetic coating material including, as main components thereof, at least ferromagnetic powders and a binder while the lower non-magnetic layers 3a, 3b being still wet to form upper magnetic layers 4a, 4b. In such a magnetic recording medium, the pore volume per unit weight of the upper magnetic layers 4a, 4b after a calender process is set in the range from 15 mm3/g to 70 mm3/g, while the pore volume per unit weight of the lower non-magnetic layers 3a, 3b after the calender process is set in the range from 40 mm3/g to 120 mm3/g.
