PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the variation between devices, of the output characteristics of the light emitting elements or light emitting chips of the light projecting section of a sensor of a paper sheets discriminating device against the fluttering of a carrying medium or folded paper sheets by enabling the device to absorb the variation of the profiles or emitted angles of emitted beams between the elements or chips caused by the deviated mounting, etc., of the elements or chips. SOLUTION: Since a paper sheets discriminating device is provided with a light diffusing member 25 in the light projecting section 19 of a transmission type sensor, the device can absorb the variation between devices, of the profiles or emitted angles of the beams emitted from the light emitting elements of the section 19 caused by the deviated mounting, etc., of the elements and can stabilize the profiles of the projected beams. Thus, even when paper sheets 13 is carried in a fluttering state, the output characteristic of the sensor is stabilized and the discriminating device can discriminate the paper sheets 13 with high accuracy.
