PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method which minimizes the load on a network when files on the network are compared. SOLUTION: This file comparing method (1) divides files A and C that two computers connected by the network hold by (n) bytes respectively (S1 to S5), (2) extracts features of size much smaller than (n) (S7) by digesting messages of the divided files, and (3) compares the extracted features to compare the files (S8).
