Benzo[b]thiophenes of the formula I or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof are used in the manufacture of a medicament for antagonizing or blocking calcium channels in vascular tissue in a warm blooded animal. In formula I: R1 and R3 are independently H, alkyl, -CO-alkyl or -CH2-Ar or -CO-Ar; Ar is optionally substituted phenyl and R2 is pyrrolidine, hexamethyleneimino, or piperidino.
