PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To mount/demount an intermediate transfer unit, having a tension release means, without scratching the surface of a belt or the surface of the photoreceptor of a device main body. SOLUTION: This device has a tension release means which when an intermediate transfer belt 160 stretched between rollers 110-150 and drivable circularly is not driven circularly, releases its tension. An intermediate transfer unit TU demountable from a device main body is demounted from the device main body by being moved almost in a horizontal direction orthogonal to the directions of the axes of the rollers, with the tension of the belt released by the tension release means.
