PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the generation of noise and the fluctuation of a reference voltage which are generated when sampling is stated and also to suppress potential fluctuations of column lines which are generated when the sampling is completed by controlling the opening and closing of switching elements for sampling while using multu-valued voltages to change conductive resistance values of the switching elements being in closed states. SOLUTION: A row control circuit 1 successively transfers a row starting signal DY in synchronization with a row clock signal CLY and outputs selection pulses on respective gate lines Y. Consequently, the opening/closing of thin film transistors for controlling pixels T are controlled. The shift register 3 of a column control circuit 2 successively transfers a column clock signal DX in synchronization with a column clock signal CLX and outputs its outputs to a waveform shaping circuit 4. The circuit 4 outputs sampling signal S1,..., Sn according to the signals received from the register 3. The sampling signals S sample a picture signal VSIG to induvidual source lines X by controlling the opening/closing of corresponding transistors for sampling TS1,..., TSn with multi-valued voltages.
