The topical pharmaceutical composition comprises an SQDG (sulpholipid) of formula I R1O-CH2-CH(OR2)_CH2-O-A-SO3- wherein either: (i) A is deoxyhexose and R1 and R2 are independently H or optionally saturated, optionally hydroxy substituted acyl groups protonated or as a salt or (ii) A is quinovose and R1 and R2 are independently H, acetyl or acyl groups having from 14-22 carbons atoms and up to 6 unsaturations in combination with polyunsaturated fatty acid in the form of free fatty acids, monoacylglycerols, diacylglycerols or triacylglycerols and a therapeutically acceptable carrier. The topical composition is used to treat psoriasis or atopic dermatitis.
