PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a coating magnetic recording medium capable of realizing high-density recording with excellent electro-magnetic conversion characteristics, excellent running durability, and satisfactory preserving characteristics of a coating film. SOLUTION: A magnetic recording medium includes a non-magnetic layer disposed on at least one surface of a non-magnetic support, and a magnetic layer disposed on the non-magnetic layer. An average thickness of the magnetic layer is 1.1μm or more. In addition, a width variation R and an interval T of the width variation as dimension characteristics of the magnetic recording medium satisfy the relationships of 0.0<=R<=P/5 and 0.0<=T<=1.0, respectively, where R (μm) represents a variation of the tape width, T (m) represents an interval of the variation of the tape width, and P (μm) represents a pitch of recording tracks.
