A knitted wound dressing comprises a mixture of textile fibres and gel-forming fibres. The knitted fabric of the dressing comprises support yarn 6 and in-laid yarn 4, the support yarn being substantially free of gel-forming fibres. The fabric may be a warp or a Raschel knitted fabric. The gel-forming fibres may be alginate or alginate composite fibres. The support yarn may be a continuous filament viscose, polyester or polypropylene yarn.
