PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable only the change of a device ID stored in a CPU as mask data, with a simple work. SOLUTION: When an arbitrary peripheral device (a printer, for example), 2 is connected to a computer 1, a two-way communication is performed in which a computer 1 outputs a command requesting the device ID to the printer 2 and the printer 2 sends back the device ID of its own in response to that command. In this case, a mask CPU 21 installed in te printer 2 is provided with a connecting terminal 21a, capable of connecting an EEPROM 3 in which an arbitrary device ID is written. During the period, when an EEPROM 3 is connected to this connecting terminal 21a corresponding to a command outputted from the computer 1 requesting the device ID, the device ID written in the connected EEPROM 3 is sent back.
