PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a High Vision system discrimination device and a High Vision receiver that automatically identify an input source without troubling a user and automatically select a video image of an optimum display area. SOLUTION: The High Vision receiver is provided with a High Vision system discrimination device 9 that automatically discriminates a MUSE decoder output signal and a digital High Vision signal and a display area setting device 2 that sets an optimum display area to the respective systems on the basis of a discrimination result by the High Vision system discrimination device 9. The High Vision system discrimination device 9 is provided with a detection line selection circuit 101 that selects a line going to be at an 'H' level between the buildup of a vertical synchronizing signal and a 20th line, a clock generating circuit 102 that generates a clock whose frequency is 16 times that of a horizontal synchronizing signal, a video detection circuit 103 that detects the video part in a received video signal, and a discrimination circuit 110 that discriminates the High Vision system on the basis of an output of the video detection circuit 103.
