PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate writing of a servo signal onto a magnetic recording medium. SOLUTION: A magnetic recording medium 4 is fabricated by forming a magnetic recording layer on a plastic substrate. In this case, a concave-and- convex pattern (a pit train 9) is formed on the plastic substrate so as to correspond to a predetermined clock pattern. When a servo signal is then written onto the magnetic recording medium 4, the pit train 9 is detected by an optical pickup 52 to generate a clock signal, and the servo signal is written by a magnetic head 8 onto the magnetic recording medium 4 with the thus-obtained clock signal being taken as reference.
