PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease the factors having effect on the anisotropy in the profile of a magnetoresistive effect element at the joint to lead wiring by providing lead wiring for supplying or draining a sense current connected electrically with the side wall of the a magnetoresistive effect element feeding a sense current substantially in parallel with the field direction of a signal from a magnetic recording medium. SOLUTION: The side wall on the magnetic recording medium side of a magnetoresistive effect element 5 and the side wall on the opposite side are inclined to enlarge gradually. More specifically, the magnetoresistive effect element 5 has a trapezoidal cross-section and a side face connected with lead wiring 61, 62. Since a planar overlap region can be eliminated from the joint of the magnetoresistive effect element 5 and the lead wiring 61, 62, the magnetoresistive effect element 5 can be fabricated effectively only of a magnetosensitive region and the anisotropy in the profile thereof can be controlled easily.
