PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To highly precisely position each constituting element constituting the head element of a thin film magnetic head. SOLUTION: A positioning marker 21 is formed on a substrate board 20. A first magnetic film 23, an MR thin film 26, a pair of electrodes 27, and a second magnetic film 29 or the like are positioned and formed with a positioning marker 21 as a reference. When an upper layer pole 31 is formed by a plating method, a plating base film 32 is removed at a position equivalent to the positioning marker 21. In forming the upper layer pole 31 on the plating base film 32 being an opaque film, positioning is carried out with the positioning marker 21 as a reference.
