PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an error correction circuit for improving the error correction ability of a product code by using an error correction impossibility detection flag obtained from the error code corrector is a prestage and controlling the correction operation of the error code corrector in a poststage. SOLUTION: This error correction circuit of the product code composed by connecting the error code correctors for plural stages is provided with an error code correction operation control circuit 4 for obtaining the number of rows which can not be corrected in the error code corrector A in the product code of one block by counting the number of the error correction impossibility detection flags 12 outputted from the error code corrector A of a prestage, generating control signals for controlling the correction operation of the error code corrector B of a poststage from the counted result and outputting them to the error code corrector B.
