PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To diagnose faults of many objects to be inspected such as rotary machines different in specifications by orthogonally developing an amplitude probability density function of a measurement signal waveform generated from the objects by Gram-Charlie series. SOLUTION: The method is based on a fact that an amplitude probability density function of a measurement signal such as vibration generated by an object to be inspected such as a machine in a steady state exhibits a normal distribution and it comes out of the normal distribution when a failure or abnormality is encountered. That is, the measurement signal generated by the object is detected, and the amplitude probability density function of an obtained measurement signal waveform is orthogonally developed by Gram-Charlie series to calculate the Gram-Charlie series to diagnose faults of the object. For example, in a fault diagnosis device for frictional faults such as abnormality in bearings, gears, belts or leak, a vibration sensor (contact) measures vibration acceleration in a piezoelectric manner, and a microcomputer performs arithmetic processing and input/output processing of data. Diagnosis results are indicated on a liquid crystal display, as normal, attention or danger.
