ILLUMINATION SYSTEM ADAPTED FOR SURGICAL LIGHTING

An illumination system (10) for illuminating an area within a room includes one or more light sources (18, 36), preferably disposed outside the room, one or more lighting heads (54) disposed within the room, one or more light pipes and/or fiber bundles (32, 38, 46, 50A, 50B, 50C, 52) to transmit light from the light source(s) (18, 36) to the lighting head(s) (54). The system includes means (22, 34, 44) for controlling both the intensity and the color rendering index of the light emitted from the lighting heads (54). In a preferred embodiment, the sources include an incandescent source (18) extending across the visible spectrum and a light emitted diode source (36) which emits essentially red light, and control of the color rendering index is effected by controlling the relative amounts of light from the two sources reaching the light head.
