A hand held passive remote programmer for a microprocessor controlled induction type Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) reader includes a housi ng containing an antenna (L1, C1), a plurality of dedicated integrated circuit RFID transponder tags (IC1-IC16) each having a unique tag code, and a keypad (22) having a plurality of keys each selectively operable for connecting a corresponding one of the transponder tag Ics to the antenna thereby to power the selected tag IC by induction in the radio frequency sensing field of a RFID reader and thereby enable the unique tag code of the selected tag IC to be read by the RFID reader via conductors (24, 26). Program instructions stored in the RFID reader recognize each unique tag code as representative o f actuation of a particular key on the remote programmer keypad and not indicative of the presentation of an access key tag to the reader. Actuation of particular keys or key sequences on the programmer may be recognized by t he RFID reader as program instructions for the reader's microprocessor.
