A hydraulic apparatus (100) for tensioning a bolt is described. The apparatus (100) includes a piston (110) for engaging a puller sleeve (114) and a cylinder block (106) slidably connected to the piston (110) such that the piston (110) and cylinder block (106) can be forced apart under hydraulic pressure to apply axial force to the puller sleeve (114) to tension a bolt (102). A sleeve (122) is connected to the piston (110) and a series of springs (128) are arranged between the sleeve (122) and cylinder block (106) such that the springs (128) are compressed by movement apart of the piston (110) and cylinder block (106). When the hydraulic pressure is released, the springs (128) urge the piston (110) and cylinder block (106) together to release the axial force applied to the puller sleeve (114).
