Described is a quiet hand-held hair dryer (20) with configuration and component combinations for making the hair dryer (20) exceptionally quiet and efficient. The hair dryer (20) includes a housing having a lower handle portion (23) and an upper body portion (21) separated by an air-directing wall (40). A large impeller (36) moves air (42) downward from a large top air inlet (25) and passes it outward through a side air outlet (33) in a hair drying stream. An electric motor (37) is mounted in the handle housing (23) adjacent its bottom (31) and is connected in driving relation with the impeller (36) by a long vertical shaft (51). The motor (37) is mounted in a rubber casing (45) permitting cooling air flow (63) and minimizing vibration to the housing; and the upper end of the shaft (51) is stabilized by a bearing (56) mounted in a rubber housing (57) for the same purpose. The configuration of the described hair dryer (20) permits high air flow with relatively low motor speeds.
