The invention relates to a method for producing an inflatable strap, notably for a seat belt, which is characterized by the following steps: weaving of a two-layer woven fabric having the structure described below: across its width the woven fabric is divided into three or more parts of approximately equal width; the warp ends of the outer parts are significantly finer than the warp ends of the central part; in narrow folding zones situated between the central part and the two adjoining outer parts the warp ends are finer than the warp ends in the central part but coarser than in the outer parts; the two fabric layers are firmly woven together in the area of the outermost edges of the outer parts; the two layers at least in the area of the two narrow folding zones are joined by means of at least one tear thread running substantially in the warp direction; more than two outer parts are folded over and placed on top of each other in a zigzag-like manner, moving from the outermost outer part to the innermost outer part until the more than two outer parts are positioned on those outer parts which adjoin the central part; the one outer part adjoining the central part is folded along the one folding zone such that it lies on the one outer surface of the central part which faces away from the second position; the other outer part adjoining the central part is folded along the other folding zone such that it lies on the other outer surface of the central part which faces away from the first position so that, in the warp direction, a compressed zigzag shape is obtained. The central part is turned inside out so that the two surfaces of the central part, which previously faced away from each other, now face each other and between them envelop the turned-over outer parts. The invention also relates to a strap produced in this manner.
